Things We Love – Tickets for Charity

We love companies that are able to run a for-profit enterprise while still helping the world, and is one such business model.

This site allows you to get great event tickets – while helping charities raise needed funds.

Created by a founder of Priceline, Tickets-for-Charity buys great seats at everything from Broadways shows to sporting events to live music performances –  and then sells them via the TicketsforCharity website, adding a donation ($10, say) to the price.

The donation for each event goes directly to a particular charity (including Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, CARE,  and United Way for America. See more Partner Charities. ). The artist designates a charity for each event, but you’ll also typically get the opportunity to choose additional charities to benefit from the purchase.

This way, you get some of the best seats available, and – instead of paying extra to those unauthorized ticket brokers or, ew, scalpers, for those great seats, you’re supporting a worthy cause. Cool, huh?

Things We Love – Playing for Change

My Uncle Steve just sent me a link to something that I want to share with you.

This is what is created when two music producers/engineers travel the globe and record street musicians playing the song “Stand by Me.” They then overlaid and mixed the voices with one another.

Listen to this gorgeous piece of sound engineering:

I could listen to Grandpa Elliot’s voice all day…such warmth! Really, the whole thing is worth a listen. Then share this post with someone who stands by you!

In addition to Stand by Me, the multi-media charity art project of which this is a part (Playing for Change) has recorded more beautiful songs, including Don’t Worry, Amazing Grace, and a version of Imagine that makes me want to cry. See all of Playing for Change’s videos on YouTube.

See ‘African Cats,’ Save the Savanna

“African Cats” is the third release for Disneynature, and it looks fantastic! Leaping into theaters on Earth Day, 2011, Disney’s “African Cats” features the real-life love, humor and determination of the kings of the African savanna: Mara, an endearing lion cub who strives to grow up with her mother’s strength, spirit and wisdom; Sita, a fearless cheetah and single mother of five mischievous newborns; and Fang, a proud leader of the pride who must defend his family from a rival lion.

And when you see “African Cats,” you can help save the Savanna. During the opening week of African Cats (April 22-28), a portion of the proceeds from that week’s ticket sales will be donated to the African Wildlife Foundation through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund to protect the Amboseli Wildlife Corridor. This corridor is a passage between the Amboseli, Tsavo West and Chyulu Hills National Parks that is frequently used by lions, cheetahs, elephants, zebras, giraffes and a host of other animals in the African savanna.

These programs can really make a difference: For EARTH, a similar program called “But a Ticket, Plant a Tree” led to the planting of 2.7 million trees in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest. Last year for OCEANS, the program was “See Oceans, Save Oceans” which helped establish 40,000 acres of marine protected area in The Bahamas, preserving essential coral reefs.

AFRICAN CATS hits theaters everywhere on Earth Day, April 22nd.
