First, take a look at the fat and calories in the foods that comprise your current diet. See where you can cut some fat. Cut back on cheeses and cream based sauces before you cut back on the healthier fats, such as that found in avocado and nuts.

When you're looking to lose weight, substitute low fat proteins, such as tofu and legumes, as much as possible. 

You'll also want to focus on eating fresh vegetables and fruits. See if you can get seven to nine (or more!) servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Expand your palate to include more exotic fruits, so you don't get bored with the standard fare of apples and lettuce.

Try mangoes and blackberries, starfruit and asian pears,  Napa cabbage, kale, and daikon radishes. Using lots of fresh herbs in your cooking is another great way to keep your vegetarian fare exciting and fresh. Experiment by adding new fruits and veggies as well as fresh cut herbs to basic soups, salads, and entrees.

One of the best things you can do to lose weight is to discover where you are consuming empty calories (those calories from food and drink that has no nutritional value) and to zap them as much as possible from your diet. Look for donuts, pastries, as well as coffee drinks and sodas.

You may be more successful (and have a more enjoyable time) with your diet if you focus on eliminating or reducing certain foods in your diet instead of putting yourself on a strict calorie budget. Simply make a habit of enjoying fresh vegetables and fruits and eliminating fatty protein sources and empty calories, and you'll be able to be successful with vegetarian weight loss.
